REVISION OF THE MINIMUM WAGE

REVISION OF THE MINIMUM WAGE

On October 29 of this year, the members of the Technical Commission on the Minimum Wage assumed their positions on the commission which is a tripartite commission integrated by representatives of the business, workers, and government sectors.

This Commission will oversee making a correct assessment of the current situation of the country and recommending the new minimum rates that will be applied by productive sector, according to the provincial area in which they are located.

The Ministry of Laboure and Labor Development has been emphatic in pointing out that a constant dialogue will be maintained that allows decisions to be made, aware of the current panorama of the country, where the unemployment rate and the essential groceries (foods) have been increasing, considering in turn the primary need to preserve business stability and jobs, looking forward to a progressive and stable economic revival.

The last revision of the minimum wage concluded on December 31, 2019, so it is projected that any variation to it must be agreed at the end of this year, to enter into force in January 2022.

We should remember that article 66 of the National Constitution establishes that the Law must seek ways to adjust the minimum wage, to improve the standard of living of the worker and his family and according to the region and economic activity.

Our Labor Code establishes that the minimum wage shall be fixed periodically, at least every two years, in accordance with the recommendations of the National Minimum Wage Commission and by decree of the Executive Branch.
